Care Lettrici e cari Lettori,
In questo nuovo numero della rubrica “Tip of the Peel” parliamo di persone, stati d’animo e situazioni di tutti i giorni. Dai momenti “facepalm” alle mattine in cui siamo completamente groggy… vediamo come dirlo in inglese.
E ora… let’s get started!
TIP OF THE PEEL – THIRD EDITION
TIP #1 – Facepalm moment
Meaning: a moment that is so embarrassing or stupid that you want to cover your face.
Examples:
“I studied the wrong chapter for the test…total facepalm moment.”
“I sent the message to the wrong person. Facepalm.”
Peel it further: it is interesting because it comes from an action. Facepalm=covering your face with your hand when something goes wrong. Very common in memes and online language.
TIP #2 – Groggy
Meaning: feeling weak, tired or not fully awake.
Examples:
“I woke up at 6 am, I’m still groggy.”
“After the nap, I felt a bit groggy.”
Peel it further: it describes a very specific feeling: not just tired…but slow, confused, half-asleep. Perfect for early morning at school!
TIP #3 – Sleepyhead
Meaning: someone who is always sleepy or loves sleeping.
Examples:
“Wake up, sleepyhead! You’re late again.”
“He’s such a sleepyhead.”
Peel it further: English often creates words by combining simple ones: sleepy + head. Cute, informal…and slightly teasing.
TIP #4 – Straight shooter
Meaning: a person who is honest and direct.
Examples:
“She’s a straight shooter. She always says what she thinks.”
“I like him. He’s a straight shooter.”
Peel it further: it comes from the idea of shooting straight. No tricks, no hiding. Just direct and honest.
TIP #5 – Couch potato
Meaning: someone who spends a lot of time sitting and watching TV (or scrolling).
Examples:
“I stayed at home all weekend like a couch potato.”
“Stop being a couch potato and come out!”
Peel it further: it’s funny and visual. And yes…we all have those days.
E per questa edizione è tutto. Vi diamo appuntamento alla prossima newsletter con nuove espressioni e nuove curiosità del “Tip of the Peel”. Stay tuned!
